History of OS-tan

Before Futaba

Personifying software did not start in 2003. Precursors include TECH Win magazine's Win-chan (1998), Toy's iMac Girl wallpapers (1998–1999), and Magical Toko-chan / Princess of BSD. Those are adjacent mascots. They are not OS-tan. OS-tan is specifically the Futaba Nijiura cluster and the works that copied its sisters-in-a-house joke.

2003 — Me-tan and the Vault

Me-tan is dated to 6 August 2003 on Nijiura. The creator later described the design as somewhat random — an early dark dress shifted toward Windows Me colors after comments on the board. Green braids, maid outfit, error-icon bow. A visual cousin to Canal Vorfeed from Lost Universe is often noted; that is influence, not a crossover.

The OS-tan Vault is documented from 25 August 2003. An 4 October 2003 archive already names DOS Prompt, 98-tan, NT-tan, Me-tan, 2000-tan, XP-tan, and Dr. Norton. By October 2004 the homepage also listed Ōbaba (3.1), 95, CE, Longhorn, Saba (Server), Lindows, Linux, Buster, McAfee, and Mac. Vault update dates then freeze. The site stayed reachable into 2010 with essentially 2004 content.

2004 — Trouble Windows leaves Japan

On 19 April 2004 a Flash 'opening' titled Trouble Windows (とらぶる・うぃんどうず) was published as if an anime existed. It did not. Wikipedia's first known appearance outside Futaba is Misfile, 28 April 2004. A YouTube upload in 2005 is how a lot of English users found it. OS-TAN TV still plays that tape, plus the songs and later explainers. The Internet Archive keeps the interactive Flash.

Toshiaki Futaba is the imaginary mangaka / PC owner — the board's default name turned into a character. OS-tans as live-in maids is a Toshiaki-house rule, not a universe bible. +Nijiura+ did not owe it anything, and neither do later distro-tans.

2005 — Fanbook, figures, claims

Ohzora published Trouble Windows OS-tan FanBook. It compiled illustrations and shipped small figures of 95, Me, and XP (OS Girl 95 / me / XP), with a molded gap for 2K. GUHICO of Stranger Workshop is credited on Me, 2K, and XP figures; Fujisaki Shiro / H.B.Company on 95. A community-commissioned Me-tan garage kit appeared at Wonder Festival 2005 Winter, then a 1/8 PVC. This is still fan merch. Microsoft did not publish it.

Controversies land in the same window: Netrunner trading cards using Me-tan (the creator forbade SoftBank Publishing), Deja Vu ArtWorks claims around NT-tan, later fights over Vista designs. English 'canon' lists are partly a reaction to those fights — OSC tried to write down which designs had actually propagated.

English boards and OS-Tan Collections

Fansubs of Trouble Windows, 4chan / wakachan translations, and artists such as Juzo-kun (Linux distro wallpapers) moved the joke out of Japanese imageboards. OS-Tan Collections became the English-language wiki and forum. It is still the largest English dump. It is also, by its own banners, outdated. That is the gap this public wiki is for.

2009–2017 — Companies notice

Nanami Madobe (Wakaba, voiced by Nana Mizuki) shipped with Japanese Windows 7 Ultimate DSP in 2009: wallpapers, event sounds, a Twitter account. Wikipedia calls this the first OS-tan marketed with the operating system itself. Strictly: it is the first partner DSP mascot sold next to Windows. Futaba already had Seven-chan the same year.

Then: Hikaru Aizawa for Silverlight (Taiwan), Claudia Madobe for Azure, Yū and Ai for Windows 8 DSP, Inori Aizawa for IE11 in Singapore (2013), Tōko Madobe for Windows 10 DSP (name announced 31 July 2015). Windows Navi+ campaigns trail off after the Windows 10 Creators Update era. Nanami's 'graduation' ran through Windows 7 end-of-support in January 2020. Windows 11 did not get a Microsoft or Navi+ girl.

2009–2026 — Futaba did not stop

English Wikipedia's 'new generation' section jumps from XP and Vista to Madobe. That hides the board. Shimuro drew Seven-chan (2009), Battenichi-chan for 8.1 (documented around the 2016 Futaba School Festival), and 11-chan (2022). Mega Ogre drew Ten-chan (2016). These designs are less known outside Nijiura. They are still OS-tans. They are not the Madobe family.

A separate 2021 Pixiv design by Karv was later named Ichika Madobe by a Reddit poll. An official Windows Instagram reel in 2024 used that design, which made a lot of people think Microsoft had finally shipped a Windows 11 OS-tan. They had not. Ichika is not 11-chan, not Navi+, and not canon Madobe.

2026 — OS TAN

OS-TAN is a rediscovery project. OS TAN is a desktop you boot in a browser. OS TAN is the face of that machine, labeled OURS. This encyclopedia is the public front door. The in-OS wiki remains the Collections dump. Both are supposed to exist.
